Description

The Big Agnes Blacktail 3 tent is an excellent balance of durability performance and affordability. Big Agnes even lends the 3-season backpacking/camping tent additional value by including a protective footprint.

The tent measures 90” x 70”. With 44 square feet of interior space and a trail weight of only 5 pounds 6 ounces the tent can serve as a comfortable home for up to 3. Dual vestibules offer 18 square feet (9 square feet per vestibule) of additional weather-protected external storage space. Interior mesh pockets provide places to stash gear and clothes while two internal media pockets located above the sleeping area enable headphone/ear bud cord routing from phones or other devices. Integrated gear loft loops offer a connection point for the Big Agnes Large Wall Gear Loft (sold separately).

The tent's aluminum poles are lightweight and durable and feature press fit connectors. This press fit pole design works in conjunction with the tent body's integrated clips to make setting up the tent fast easy and intuitive. An additional short section of pole runs across the roof pulling the tent body taut increasing the verticality of the interior walls and helping to maximize the spaciousness of the two vestibules. Lightweight aluminum hook stakes are included to further secure the freestanding tent.

Ample mesh on the tent body and the large D-shaped doors encourage cross ventilation and provide circulation to fight condensation build-up. Coated with 1500mm waterproof polyurethane the polyester floor and rainfly are lightweight and durable. All of the tent's seams are tape-sealed with waterproof solvent-free polyurethane tape (no PVC or VOCs) to further protect the tent from the elements.

  • Features two doors and two vestibules
  • Storm flaps on vestibule zipper
  • Symmetrical pole structure simplifies set up
  • Quick Stash on tent body door makes stowing unzipped door quick and easy
  • Media pockets located above sleeping area enable clean ear bud cord routing from phones or other devices
  • Two fly vents
  • Velcro tabs connect fly to pole structure providing perfect pitch and extra stability
  • Ready to pitch; with pre-cut guy lines and tensioners attached to fly
  • Reflective guylines and webbing on tent corners

Roomy, functional, and strong

Likes

This is an amazing tent. It's incredibly roomy. I'm 6'5", and I've never been in a backpacking tent this luxurious. It's not the lightest tent on the market, but it's extremely durable and weatherproof. The color is quite soothing too, which is important if you spend any time in your tent.

Dislikes

Minor issue: The footprint grommets don't fit snugly into the tent pole ends on flat ground--the footprint seems a bit too large. I called Big Agnes and they told me this was by design, likely to compensate for uneven ground, and that when the tent is fully guyed out, it will become snug. Haven't tested that yet, but I'm not too fussed by it.

No dislikes. I returned it because I wanted a lighter tent for my trip!

Good tent for camping, a bit heavy for a backpack

Likes

Overall construction of this tent is great, two doors, color scheme and easy setup are big positives. I usually buy one size up for the amount of people sleeping in the tent and this tent is very comfortable for two. I like that this tent came with a footprint, I feel all tents should come with this as opposed to an extra option.

Dislikes

I purchased this tent as an entry level backpacking tent. It does work for this, but it is on the heavy side. During end of season sales a tent weighing a pound less can be had at the same cost, which makes a huge difference the farther you trek out.

Cons outweigh pros in this tent...

Likes

Ease of set-up and relatively small packed size. Color of the tent and net were pleasant and didn't interfere with star gazing. Perfect for two people and my Exped Mega Mat Duo pad...

Dislikes

We used this one night. It was humid, but absolutely dry conditions. (We're in the middle of a drought.) When we were dismantling the tent, there was a large puddle of condensation between the footprint and the tent body almost in the middle of the set-up...and my previously mentioned (and much loved) Mega Mat was damp on the bottom from that puddle. Not good. My first experience with a Big Agnes product. Also, while the footprint was sized correctly for the tent, it would not stay attached to the tent body as either the straps or grommets just didn't fit properly. I'm returning it.

Blacktail 3 Just Right For Me

Likes

After putting this tent through a week of hard use I now feel I can give it a review. The weight of the tent makes it very pack-able while still being strong enough to handle some winter type weather. I had it in some 25 mph wind with gusts of an estimated 40 and had no problems at all. The snow didn't accumulate on top of the tent even with the extra pole which gives it more of a vertical side wall. There was plenty of space for all my gear inside the tent plus my 6'1" frame and XL sleeping bag without it touching the interior tent wall. Tent set up is so easy a caveman could do it with the color coded pieces. Poles collapse down to fit into a pack with ease. Zippers are easy to pull and fairly quiet. I would recommend this tent for anyone needing just a little more space or room for two people.

Dislikes

My only dislikes are the tiny sizes of the zipper pulls and fly tie backs. They would be fine for little fingers that aren't wearing gloves but for a guy with big hands in gloves during cold weather they can be a bit frustrating to use.
