Whether used on its own or in tandem with another pad to add protection and warmth, the Exped FlexMat is an ultra-lightweight, durable, and budget-friendly option for backpacking or alpine climbing. Its closed cell foam construction and accordion-style design make for at-the-ready and reliable all-season use.

The pad is constructed of molded closed-cell IXPE foam. Its 1.5 R-value makes it suitable as a stand-alone in warmer seasons and moderate temperature. The lightweight, durable design also makes the pad a great protective barrier beneath inflatable or self-inflating pads and this really shines in winter or colder weather.

The Exped FlexMat closed cell foam is available in Xsmall (51" x 20.5" x 0.7"), Medium (72" x 20.5" x 0.7"), and Long/Wide (77.6" x 25.6" x 0.7") size options.

Half pad

Excellent (but not by itself)

I bought the 72'' length version and cut it in half. At less than 6oz, you get a lot of utility with the half-length: helps protect your inflatable pad from punctures and boosts its warmth, acts as a camp seat, works for mid-day naps beside the trail, etc.

Dislikes

Because it's thinner/lighter than other folding foam pads, it's not very comfortable on its own.
