Description

Striking a balance between weight and durability, the high-performance Gregory Zulu 55 internal frame backpack has the storage capacity and load-hauling capability for long backcountry weekends but it fits and carries like a dynamic, torso-hugging day pack.

The pack’s Free Float suspension offers low-profile ventilation and moisture wicking dual-density EVA foam mesh on the backpanel and shoulder harness to aid in load transfer, provide cushioning and keeping you cool on the trail. A spring steel perimeter frame with fiberglass anti-barreling cross-stays supports the pack. The pack comes in Small/Medium (best fits 15"-19" torso sizes) and Medium/Large (18"-22") sizes to ensure a proper fit for varying back lengths and there is built in size customization to dial fit in even more precisely. A "comfort cradle" design in the hipbelt delivers a comfortable, body-hugging fit, while Float Bushings allow the hip belt and pack to flex and move with your body without compromising stability. An adjustable sternum strap (with integrated safety whistle) and load-lifter straps further enhance the fit of the pack and ensure the stability of your load.

The top-loading main compartment has over 3200 cubic inches of storage space and is accessed through a broad, draw-cord closure opening. The compartment is protected by a top lid that has two zippered storage pockets. There is also a U-shaped zippered entry that grants access to the interior of the pack without the lid needing to be removed. A separate lower front compartment is the perfect place to store a sleeping bag and a large front stretch pocket is ideal for wet or bulky gear best stored outside of the pack's interior. Other storage options include a sunglasses loop on the shoulder strap, large hip belt pockets, and a zippered top pocket. Other features include adjustable attachment loops for trekking poles or ice axe, side stretch water bottle pockets, a nifty sunglasses attachment system on the shoulder straps, and pass-through compression straps to keep contents secure without interfering with stowed water bottles (bottles not included). A custom fit raincover is included to keep you pack and its contents protected and drying wet hikes. An internal sleeve and an integrated drinking tube pass-through make the pack hydration system compatible (system sold separately).

The Gregory Zulu 55 internal frame pack is available in your choice of size and color options.

HIGH SPEED LOW DRAG!

Likes

The engineers who designed this pack deserve a raise! Hands down the most comfortable and secure pack I have ever owned. I bought the men’s Zulu 55 and it has never failed any test I have put it through, I can pack a comfortable week into it with plenty of room for food and my fly fishing gear! If you are looking for a tight to the body pack that ventilates well on the back to crush miles with, this is is the bag for you!

A good mid level pack

Likes

I have the 30 liter version for day hiking and really enjoy that one. Lots of pockets and a good price.

Dislikes

This is just a larger version but isn’t nearly as comfortable as some higher ended packs cough cough AG packs

The average pack - noting special. The Gregory service in US is null.

Likes

Looks nice. Mesh pockets are comfortable.

Dislikes

Suspension system is mediocre. Hip belt is rather stiff, digs in the lower back the way it even hurts. Gregory support is null. I have had the the plastic holder of the sternum strap broken the day the pack arrived. Tried to contact Gregory support 3 time without any response.

Great fitting backpack!

Likes

Hip belt very comfortable. U shaped zipper provides easy access to items.the torso adjustment allowed me to dial in the perfect fit. The stretchy side pockets provided easy storage for the water bottles. The stretch back pocket is great for storing a long sleeved fleece shirt and gloves. The shoulder straps have comfortable padding.

Dislikes

None so far.

Good pack for weekends or for longer lightweight trips

Likes

I have an older Osprey Exos 48L which is a great lightweight pack. However I wanted a new pack that would be more suitable for carrying all my gear plus my camera gear. The bottom entry is where I store my camera gear with a Tenba BYOB camera insert, so I can get quick access without digging through the whole pack, or opening the lid and draw cord on top. My travel tripod fits well in the side pocket and held in place with the compression straps. The suspension for the pack is great. My pack weight with my camera gear and tripod is usually around 25# and it carries well on my back. I have been able to fit a bear canister in the pack with all my gear as well. I like that the rain cover is included. Haven't needed to use it yet, but like that i don't have to purchase an additional one. The adjustable torso length was helpful, I had to tweak it just a bit for me to have a more comfortable fit. The Velcro holding it is pretty tough and hasn't slipped at all during use. This pack is a great pack and can carry everything for a weekend /short trip if you don't have a ton of bulk gear.

Dislikes

Mainly the weight of the pack. It's not as light as my Exos, but it's not so heavy as to be unbearable. If you are really concerned about weight, look at the Gregory Optic.

Nice pack but not for me

Likes

Adjustable torso, decent weight to volume ratio, holster-style water bottle pockets, inside-out compression strap routing, large hip belt pockets.

Dislikes

The mesh back suspension is not tight. Easily compressed and does not keep the load off your back and provide ventilation. I have the Zulu 40 and its mesh suspension is tight and provides more of a gap the more you load it.
