Description

An ideal filtration solution for large groups, the Katadyn BeFree 3.0L Microfilter is a lightweight, easy-to-use filtration system. It weighs just 4 ounces, packs down small, and filters up to 2 quarts per minute!

Eliminating the need for hoses or separate containers, the system integrates a 0.1 micron microfilter directly into the cap to remove bacteria and cysts, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium. No pumping is required and there's no need to allow time for purification to occur. Simply fill the reservoir and filtered water can be drawn directly from the nozzle. The filter’s hollow fiber EZ-Clean Membrane can be easily cleaned at home without the need for backflushing, brushes, or other cleaning tools. Note: The EZ-Clean Membrane has a capacity of up to 1,000 liters, depending on water quality and the EZ-Clean Membrane Replacement Element (sold separately) can be purchased to extend the life of the system beyond that point.

Have used three times so far backcountry camping. Worked well as a base camp filter, except the flow rate is a little slow.

Likes

Light. Good volume for base camp.

Dislikes

Slow flow rate.

Time will tell

Likes

To be completely honest I haven’t tested it yet. The mere reason for the purchase was to settle the mixed reviews I’ve seen.

Dislikes

Only time will tell which side of the debate this product will stand.

Could be great, but kinda slow and bag got hole 1st trip

Likes

It is light and great for base camp convenience . No back flushing . Once you work on getting the plastic’y taste out of the bag( lemon water- freeze - rinse) AND the filter ( lots of flushing then got creative with sitting dirty side in lemon water and then rinsing). Took time but worth it if you dislike the plastic taste.

Dislikes

Slow- but overall it worked well. The bag part is rather fragile. Second day on trail and it had a pin hole in it! A total drag and will probably return it. Temp fix with duct tape worked , but 2 days?? I’m not that tough on gear and it wasn’t stored with a knife or anything.

Decent but expensive long term

Likes

Great flow rate and very easy to use. I like the wide mouth opening for filling up the water. It's nice to not have to wait so long to fill up and you can drink directly from the device which saves time while on a trail.

Dislikes

somewhat difficult to clean/backwash. It seemed easy from the reviews and description but i find it never gets fully cleared out. also, this can be expensive down the road because you will have to replace the filter more frequently than other products due to the inferior cleaning method and materials. That said, you sacrifice long term cost for the luxury of speed, storage and convenience. .

Easy to use

Likes

Lightweight, wide mouth to gather water with, only one bag and filter piece. Tried it on an overnight trip last week, it worked better than expected. It was easy to collect water and quick in filtering the water. I would recommend this over the 2 bag gravity filters.

Dislikes

Hard to close valve with only one hand when other hand is holding a cup that it is filtering in.
