Balancing weight, performance, and price, the freestanding Mountainsmith Bear Creek 4 tent is a budget-friendly option for camping.

Description

Balancing weight, performance, and price, the freestanding Mountainsmith Bear Creek 4 tent is a budget-friendly option for camping.

With a trail weight of 7 pounds, 2 ounces, the tent offers 70 square feet of usable interior. Aluminum poles provide sturdy structure, ease of set-up, and create a streamlined 12-square foot vestibule in-front of the large door. A small rear panel “closet door” provides access to exterior storage. Interior mesh storage pockets provide a place to stash clothes and small gear items.

Clip construction makes it easy to connect the 68D polyester body of the tent to the poles. Mesh construction in the walls of the tent body combats condensation. Mountainsmith further ensures watertight performance with the PU-coated 68D rainfly, fully taped seams, and bathtub floor construction. Reflective guylines provide visibility for those times when you need to set up after dark.

An included footprint further protects the floor of the tent against ground water, roots and rocks. In warm weather or to save weight, you can leave the tent body behind and use the rainfly, the poles, and the footprint to reduce packed weight to 5 pounds, 5 ounces.

Great tent, good price, high quality

Likes

The tent is well made and watertight out of the box. I have used this tent 3 times and each time it has rained, twice it was torrential. Stayed dry. I use this as a solo tent car camping with Scouts. Well designed, roomy and vents well. Even at sub zero weather with high humidity, the condensation was minimal. The front vestibule has smaller useable space, but the one in the back makes up for it if you like to max your interior space. Footprint is also larger, which is good, but care must be taken to tuck it in to prevent water pooling on it. Overall, I like the tent a lot, would buy again, if I could I'd buy a second one for when this one wears out.

Dislikes

Gear pockets only on one side. The fly is larger, which is good, but it needs additional guy out lines to keep it taunt and off the body of the tent. Minor issue, but be aware, you will need extra lines. Coupled with the larger footprint, this could result in a wet night. Mind you I did not experience this, but I am meticulous about checking my flylines and footprint each morning and night because I have experienced the problem with other tents.
