Not very comfortable...

I just cut my hair off very short and am looking for a hat for hiking trip in SW Utah this spring/fall that will protect my neck from sunburn. I have a couple of OR hats that I like and the features of this hat were appealing. And it was on sale...

Not comfortable to wear due to a piece of elastic on the back of the detachable shade that is too short and thus, makes it very tight around your head when the shade is hooked on. The elastic isn't necessary anyway, so if I opt to keep the hat I'll cut that elastic apart. The hat is cut very shallow for a ball cap, so hits about 1/2" about my ears. Expected a little better from OR design department.

Excellent at Multiple Things

Lightweight, airy, blocks the sun, blocks the wind, blocks bugs, the white color makes it easier to find ticks, functional in heavy winds, the cowl is removeable, the back is adjustable via velcro, cowl cinches right up to your chin for a tight fit...

Nothing so far... perhaps the cowl in the back could be a tad longer

A very good cap so far

I really like this cap. I like that its not very tall so it doesn’t ride on my ears. I guess I have a short head. This leaves room for sunglasses to sit comfortably on my ears. The brim is shorter than a standard ball cap, but it seems to protect my nose ok. I’ve mainly been wearing this cap without the sun skirt which makes it similar to the Swift cap. I hate getting sunburned, so the sun skirt is great if I’m in the sun for extended time. This is a great dual purpose cap.

The sun skirt is a little bit of a pain to install or uninstall. I don’t love the Velcro strap as the Velcro sticks to clothing and hoodies. Would prefer a snap buckle which would also make installing the skirt easier. I also don’t like how the tag is sewn into the sweatband at the mesh side panels making it visible through the mesh. I cut the tag off very short to minimize this, but didn’t rip it off so I didn’t tear the stitching. Pretty minor issue, but the tag could have been sewn near the brim to make it a non-issue.

Excellent fit and design. Keeping sun off the neck really does keep me cooler. I resisted purchasing this style of hat for years but now hardly ever hike in the summer without it and would highly recommend this to others.

Anonymous Backcountry Edge Customer

As a distance runner and hiker in California, I was looking for a hat that would not only shade my head, but also the sides of my face. Health and vanity being my primary motivations, I want to avoid the sunspots and spotty complexion, and risk of Melanoma, that are so easy to acquire while exercising outside. This hat exceeded my expectations. The key component is the drawstring under the chin. In breezy conditions (almost always breezy near the water), the sides stay put. The bill is shorter than most, but still works well given the side panels. I like the adjustable band in the back.

Shorter bill

For anyone who is a serious runner or hiker, you know the perils of sunburn on your neck and face not to mention how bad it feels afterwards, and this cap is the best and most versatile solution. Runners especially, as the name implies, should look to this if you plan on being out there all day.

It makes all my other good hats useless
