The feature-rich Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL 1 tent boasts an impressive interior space-to-weight ratio. The balance of weight and performance is sure to appeal to thru-hikers and ounce-counting solo backpackers.

Description

Stretching a full 88" in length, the interior of the tent is 38" wide at the head and tapers to a width of 28" at the feet. With 20 square feet of interior space and a trail weight of only 2 pounds, 5 ounces, the tent offers ample room for solo hikers. A vestibule offers 9 square feet of additional weather-protected external storage space. Interior mesh pockets provide places to stash gear and clothes while media pockets located above the sleeping area enable headphone/ear bud cord routing from phones or other devices. Integrated gear loft loops offer a connection point for the Big Agnes Triangle Gear Loft (sold separately).

The tent’s DAC Featherlite NFL aluminum poles are both lightweight and durable. The single hub/pole design works in conjunction with the tent body's integrated clips to make setting up the tent fast, easy, and intuitive. An additional short section of pole runs across the roof of the tent and connects easily via an innovative attachment that pulls the tent body taut, increasing the verticality of the interior walls and helping to maximize the spaciousness of the vestibule. An eco-friendly anodizing process is used by DAC to treat the poles without the toxic chemicals traditionally used on aluminum tent poles. Reflecting an overall commitment to maintaining as light a packed weight as possible, superlight aluminum J stakes are included to further secure the freestanding tent.

Ample mesh on the tent body and the large D-shaped door encourages cross ventilation and provides circulation to fight condensation build-up. Coated with 1200mm waterproof polyurethane, the rip-stop nylon floor and rainfly are lightweight and durable. All of the tent's seams are seal-taped with waterproof, solvent-free polyurethane tape (no PVC or VOCs) to further protect the tent from the elements.

If you really want to travel light, leave the tent body at home and use the rainfly alone with the optional Copper Spur HV UL 1 Footprint (sold separately) for a tarp-style set-up that weighs a mere 1 pounds, 12 ounces.

So light, so easy to set up, so potentially soggy

I love how light and packable this tent is! The featherlite poles are so easy to work with and I really like the little plastic cups that afford some extra flexibility with the awning. Set up is easy and intuitive. The tent body mesh is super durable, it surprised me how "brawny" it was compared to my other tents. I was a bit skeptical about the bathtub material, but I ended up with water between my ground sheet and the tent floor and no water seeped in from the bottom, so thumbs up there! It felt relatively warm, and there is a vent by your head on the side of the tent (not sure I like that placement.) The stakes that come with the tent are ok, they do hold well. I am also thankful there is a color other than orange to choose from, thank you Big Agnes! The guy out points have lines attached and they're good reflective ones, bonus! You will probably want another line for the rear guy out, there's a loop but it's kinda at that in-between length. I'm still considering this tent for my AT hike despite the gripes below, the setup and packability are so huge for me, just want to be protected from the elements too! Happy Camping!

My biggest gripe is rain performance. My first night in this tent was at Mount Rainier, Cougar Rock. I had just enough time to pitch it before it poured...PNW pour. The rain bounced right under the fly and onto the tent body; I was not thrilled. The bathtub is 6" high at the head, 5" at the foot, this did not contain all the splash. It was disappointing to realize that the extra material above the tub is not waterproof. The seam between the tub and regular material leaked drops through, so the pitter-patter was inside the tent as well. It wasn't a lot (maybe 6 full drips, enough to make a small puddle), but it only rained for maybe half an hour; my confidence would not be high with wind and blowing rain. This tent is not large and the foot of my sleeping bag is pretty close to the foot of the tent. If I keep the tent, I'm hoping just waterproofing the seam would do it...which I wasn't expecting to need to do for over $300. Other gripes, the rainfly zipper needs TLC to not get caught in the buffer, the fly vent *works*, but the condensation I had that night was real. It did keep gently raining overnight, about 40 degrees. Taking the tent body down with the fly still up was a drippy mess as the fly sits so close everywhere. The vestibule is small, I don't use it for storage anyway, but especially on a rainy day it might be a problem...though I like it because I can zip it to the ground without being 3/4 out of the tent ;)

not happy with the UL1 design w hot weather. for 10 oz) more, I'd opt for the HV UL 2. Aside from the added space, the UL2 can cross-ventilate with the fly on, whereas the UL1 has just 1 door. Also, orienting the tent is easier w 2 doors
