Description

The feature-rich Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL 4 backpacking tent boasts an impressive interior space-to-weight ratio. The balance of weight and performance is sure to appeal to ounce-counters who still appreciate comfort.

Measuring 80” x 96” and offering 57 square feet of interior space at a trail weight of only 5 pounds, 1 ounce, the tent offers ample room for 4 hikers or serves as a super spacious shelter for 2 or 3. Dual vestibules offer 28 square feet (14 square feet per vestibule) of additional weather-protected external storage space. Interior mesh pockets provide places to stash gear and clothes while media pockets located above the sleeping area enable headphone/ear bud cord routing from phones or other devices. Integrated gear loft loops offer a connection point for the Big Agnes Square Gear Loft (sold separately).

The tent’s DAC Featherlite NFL aluminum poles are both lightweight and durable. The single hub/pole design works in conjunction with the tent body's integrated clips to make setting up the tent fast, easy, and intuitive. An additional short section of pole runs across the roof of the tent and connects easily via an innovative attachment that pulls the tent body taut, increasing the verticality of the interior walls and helping to maximize the spaciousness of the vestibules. An eco-friendly anodizing process is used by DAC to treat the poles without the toxic chemicals traditionally used on aluminum tent poles. Reflecting an overall commitment to maintaining as light a packed weight as possible, superlight aluminum J stakes are included to further secure the freestanding tent.

Ample mesh on the tent body and the large D-shaped doors encourages cross ventilation and provides circulation to fight condensation build-up. Coated with 1200mm waterproof polyurethane, the rip-stop nylon floor and rainfly are lightweight and durable. All of the tent's seams are seal-taped with waterproof, solvent-free polyurethane tape (no PVC or VOCs) to further protect the tent from the elements.

If you really want to travel light, leave the tent body at home and use the rainfly alone with the optional Copper Spur HV UL 4 Footprint (sold separately) for a tarp-style set-up that weighs a mere 4 pounds, 3 ounces.

The Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL 4 backpacking tent is available in your choice of color options.

  • Based on the features of the best-selling, award-winning Copper Spur ultralight tents, the Copper Spur HV UL design allows for high volume pole architecture resulting in steeper walls without adding weight

Great overall lightweight 3 season tent for up to 3 people

Likes

It's lightweight, easy to set up, well designed and constructed of quality materials. Easy to split up and share the weight. Can be used with footprint and fly alone for even lighter shelter when insects aren't an issue. Perfect for a family of 3. With good vestibule space.

Dislikes

Zippers on fly have to be handled carefully or sticking can occur. We had the tent mostly flatten on us in high winds (even with guy lines) and had to relocate. Something to keep in mind when placing this tent. That's the trade off for such light weight.

Great Tent

Likes

We bought this for our family of 4 (dad, mom, and two 10 yr olds) for backpacking. The space is great. We are able to fit all 4 of our Big Agnes pads along one side and all 4 of our backpacks at the foot of the pads. For years we were in 2 separate tents. It is great to finally all be in one tent. We love having the 2 doors. We use one of the vestibules for our little chairs at night. All in all we LOVE this tent!

Dislikes

The zippers on the vestibules catch. We have to be really careful when zipping and unzipping.

Just what I needed

Likes

The space-to-weight ratio is fantastic. Fits me, my wife and our three young children pretty comfortably. If you need a larger sized tent that's still doable for multi-day backpacking trips, look no further.

Dislikes

Zippers are a bit chintzy, but do what they need to do. Maybe not let your 5yo operate them.

Finally, a winner...

Likes

Due to some injuries, my partner and I both need larger backpacking sleeping pads and it's been incredibly difficult to fine a tent that would accommodate our 30" x 77" pads. I have ordered, inspected, measured and ultimately returned too many to count. Finally, I broke down and ordered the UL 4. It's light enough for us to split the weight and big enough to fit our pads without them being pressed against all sides. Our first trip was at Yellowstone and we weren't expecting rain...but it ended up sleeting, then pouring rain for hours. Despite not guying out the fly, the tent stayed dry except where the soaking wet fly had pressed against the sides all night. Floor was dry, although there was a lot of water underneath. I was able to buy this on sale, using some of my review points, which made it affordable in comparison to other tents I'd been using. Like the reflective bits on the outside, as it makes finding a tent in the dark much easier. Very soggy tent and fly dried really quickly.

Dislikes

Wouldn't consider it at full price, just too expensive. Zippers seem problematic. Partner is not a fan of orange, so we got the green. It's a pretty bilious color, yet it completely blends in with the surroundings, so that's a plus. However, I'll take it over the neon colors that are out there.

So far so good

Likes

Lightweight, easy to set up. Haven't had a chance to use it yet.

Dislikes

The loops for the gear loft are too small for the Big Agnes large square gear loft.

Great Family Backpacking tent

Likes

Light, easy to pack and a simple set up. I have a family of 5 and was looking for the biggest ultralight tent I could get so my wife and kids could all sleep in the same tent while in the back country and this seems to be the biggest available. I just took it out for two nights with the three kids and it was great. We all agreed that Mom could probably fit in as well, but it only fit the 4 sleeping mats so it will be tight. I wish I could find a five person tent, but it seems you then get into car camping territory so for my situation this is the best it is going to get. Very happy with the purchase in the end and so were the kids. TBD on what mom will say once we test it with her in there too...

Dislikes

My only two complaints are: 1.) The rain fly doesn't quite go as close to the ground as I typically like and the tent overall has such good ventilation that the heat escapes quite a bit at night. This is a great thing in the summer, but in the colder months when you actually put the rain fly on isn't as nice as my older 3 man ultralight tent that holds the heat more by hugging the ground closer. As a dad with 3 small kids it's nice to feel warm at night and in the morning when the kids are getting dressed or flop out of the bags. I guess this is good for condensation, but not worth the trade in my opinion with smaller kids 2.) The footprint should be bit bigger on each side sand should clip to the tent. You have to stake it down to get it to work and that isn't always an option at every corner depending where you set up.

An oasis in the wilderness

Likes

I purchased this tent as an all-around backpacking/car camping tent for my family (wife and four month old). This tent offers lots of room and feels like a palace; There are smartly designed storage options within the tent. I also appreciate how large the doors are it makes getting in and out of the tent with our baby easier than our other tents.

Dislikes

Big Agnes, being the innovative company they are needs to revolutionize the way zippers come together on the fly, its such a pain to fight with the fly zipper every time you get in or out. I purchased the footprint for this tent, and when I go to pack the everything up, I have to fight to get it in the storage sack, which I never had to do with the REI Quarter Dome 3+ that I retired when I purchased the Copper Spur. If Big Agnes could just make the mouth of the storage sack a little wider than the rest of the sack I don't think this issue would be there.

Love, Love, Love

This tent is Awesome! Coming from a Flycreek UL3 for last 5 years. Love the dual doors. Love the dual vestibules. Love that setup is fast and solid. Primary use is solo with two dogs and camera gear. Some trips I am adding (x2), 12 year-old boys. Warranty from Backcountry Edge is unbelievably awesome. Weight is minimal for so much space. Did I mention that I love this tent? YMMV.
