The Zipper is Its Downfall
Likes
This is a beautiful coat. The pictures I have seen all over the internet do not do it justice by how nice it really looks in person. I bought it in black, and it looks just as dark as the night sky. There are so many pockets on and in this thing that someone could probably carry the kitchen sink (not really, but the pockets are seriously everywhere). Fjallraven managed to design a coat that actually looks like something I could wear to work in a university setting even with all these doggone pockets. The zipper pulls are made of nice leather, and it isn't overly bulky to wear. The hood is huge and feels more like a heavy blanket covering the top of my head -- it can be synched to fit a variety of wearers though. The material feels durable and tough but doesn't resemble the same kind of fabric you'd see on a construction worker jacket.

I began to get cold after about 10 minutes wearing this coat in 25 degree weather. This was probably the biggest let-down after spending so much on this coat. The next issue is what I identified in the title of this review... it's a different experience that the zipper pull is on the left side of the coat (Rab has this same application in their jackets), but, while I did not know this before purchasing it, I figured this was something I could get used to. However, just getting the zipper attached to zip up was much more hassle than I thought a coat of this cost is worth. I figured there might be a learning curve behind doing this, and so I practiced with it a handful of times before finally giving up as it kept jamming. The bottom of the coat where the zipper begins is just a few inches above my knees, and the zipper kept sliding up as I continued to try and keep from moving with my left hand. Placing the other end of the zipper into the pull with my right hand was also awkward. A minor issue was that I found some loose threads on the coat -- while I could have cut these off myself, I suppose I just figured this wouldn't have been the case given how expensive it is. After hearing so much positive things behind this brand, I was quite disappointed in my experience with the Yupik. I wanted so badly to love this coat, but the zipper made it inoperable for me. I think my experience seems to be rare, however, as almost every review I had read online raved about how warm and amazing this coat is, so maybe I either got a dud or need to become more ambidextrous. As always, Enwild gave me unmatched customer service through my entire experience with this purchase -- from the phone call asking about the product to the unfortunate decision to return it. I think Enwild continues to dominate the outdoor industry in delivering what they say on their website -- amazing service.
