Description

The award-winning Gregory Baltoro 85 internal frame backpack boasts a wealth of access points, an array of trail-worthy features and an innovative, custom-fit suspension system that combine to make this 4880+ cubic inch pack a backcountry workhorse.

Determined to avoid the failings of ill-fitting backpacks, Gregory has equipped the Baltoro 85 with the high-performance Response Automatic Angle Adjust (A3) suspension system. Designed to flex with the natural movements of your body, a “wishbone” 7075 aluminum alloy wire frame works in tandem with an HDPE framesheet to distribute weight evenly, providing superior load stability, comfort and range of motion. With the expectation that the Baltoro 85 may be expected to haul loads of as much as 60 pounds, Gregory also equipped the pack with dual, anti-barreling support stays to make certain that weight is properly supported. A composite EVA foam backpanel offers breathability and support while resting comfortably against your back. Extensive, contoured padding in the harness, lumbar area, and hipbelt further enhance both fit and comfort. A removable shim of EVA foam can be used or removed to beef up the lumbar padding to best suit your preference. The pre-curved shoulder straps and hipbelt fins move independently of one another to mirror your every movement on-trail or off. These components are available in varying sizes, allowing you to customize the Baltoro 85 to deliver the best fit for backpackers of all shapes and sizes. If you require customization of components, please leave detailed instructions about what size hipbelt and/or harness you need in the “Order Comment” field on the “Order Review” screen at checkout or call us at 1.800.617.0643 to place your customized order directly with one of our Gear Specialists. A sternum strap and load-lifter straps further enhance the pack’s fit and ensure the stability of your load.

A lashed divider separates the top and front-entry main compartment of the Baltoro 85 from a lower sleeping bag compartment, allowing for organization and separation of wet and dry gear. When hauling longer items or in need of access between the two compartments, you can unhook the divider and convert the Baltoro 85 to a single, large compartment. The extendible lid of the Baltoro 85 includes a weather-resistant zippered pocket for stowing gear and can be detached entirely to save weight. The pack has a wealth of other organizational features, including an enormous zippered front pocket, dual zippered bellows side pockets, two sizable and separated lid pockets, and a smaller zip pocket on the underside of the lid.

Other features include a canted, hideaway water bottle holder, two zippered hipbelt pockets one of which is entirely waterproof, gear attachment loops, and side, cross over and lower panel compression straps. Gregory also includes a raincover for full protection against the elements. An integrated sleeve and exit port make the Baltoro 85 hydration system (sold separately) compatible. That same sleeve can be removed entirely and, thanks to its integrated minimalist shoulder strap, it can be used as a lightweight daypack or summit pack!

The Gregory Baltoro 85 backpack is available in your choice of colors and Small (fits torso lengths ranging from 16”-18”), Medium (18”-20”) and Large (20”-22”) size options.

Built Tough

Likes

Gregory is my brand of choice when it comes to backpacking packs. This pack carries a lot of weight very well, and has more than enough pockets for storage and organization, it is built tough and sure to last many trips out in the backcountry. I also like the lumbar insert, it comes in handy.

Dislikes

This particular model of the Baltoro is a bit more than I personally need. I have taken it on some multi day trips and although it has served my purposes well, I've found I don't need so many pockets. Also, would prefer it had a front shove it pocket instead of a zip (as the new models do). l have found that the straps and belt, although super tough, are not as soft and comfortable as I personally like my packs to be on long hauls. Overall though, it is a workhorse of a pack and will stand the test of time well.

Great backpack for the money. I enjoy the videos of the product. The video by Luke on this backpack was my deciding factor.

Size. Pockets. Fit.

More pockets.

Great Product

Likes

I had looked at this product in person at my local REI shop and loved the fit and adjustability of it, given my larger frame size. I could not find a pack that equaled the comfort with the carrying capacity of this product. This combined with the great price offered by Back Country Edge made it an easy choice to purchase it from you.

This is a wonderful backpack and performed better than expected. No problems!

Likes

It was comfortable and easy to get on and off. It had all the compartments I needed and was easy to pack and easy to get to the items in the pouches while hiking.Overall, I am very happy with it.

Dislikes

Nothing, really, but if I would change anything, I think I would put some color accents on it to make it look a little better and be able to differentiate it from all the other black backpacks...ie, zippers, drawstrings, etc. It would make it more convenient to find when looking for it in the dark/poor light conditions. A nice looking logo would help.

Nice pack with lots of features

Likes

Roomy, compactable, great looking, relatively light, comfortable. Tons of access zippers and pockets.

Dislikes

Would like to see a secure inside pocket for valuables and nonslip material on the base. Seems like the pack will not always stand up straight. Back panel has cooling mesh but does not stop sweating.

Moves with you

Likes

Independent suspension moves with you, plenty of space, great water bottle pocket, sleeping bag area, plenty of compression straps

Dislikes

Weatherproof pocket doesn’t fit iPhone plus, area against back/frame could be more breathable.. I think they changed that on the new model

It fits snuggly, and the fact that it included a day pack and rain cover is an awesome bonus.

Dislikes

Waterproof pouch is a little small.

Most comfortable freighter out there

Likes

Gregory builds packs that just work right: the fit, durability, and features are all are spot on. I don't like carrying heavy loads, but when I have to, this pack gets it done in comfort. It has massive capacity, a great pocket layout, a water bottle holder that I can reach without removing the pack, and a firm, highly adjustable suspension that doesn't bottom out under heavy loads, and feels incredible under light loads.

Dislikes

No. I have nit-picks with every other piece of outdoor gear I own, but not this pack. It's as close to perfect as any gear I've ever owned.

Comfortable but small

Likes

very comfortable. hip belt flexes/rotates with your movement. good rain cover. cool small pack included

Dislikes

To many pockets and the pocket capacity shrinks when the pack is filled. Pocket zippers close at the TOP allowing debris to fall into them. 3 pockets on the "brain" make it easy to accidentally have it become top-heavy. The 2 pockets on top of the brain overlap limiting their capacity. The front pocket limits attaching equipment outside the pack. The middle opening of the front pocket allows for everything to fall out when opened. No "neck" extension of the main pack, limiting the packing capacity. No emergency whistle on chest strap (maybe this is patented by a company, but a great feature I wish it had) No way this is 85 liters!

Overall it was tough enough to travel the world

Likes

I had high expectations purchasing a new backpack since my workhorse Arcteryx Bora 90 held up for over 9 years. I needed ruggedness, comfort and a good pocket organization system. I took my Baltoro 85 on a two year around the world trip with months of trekking, flights and being stuffed into cars, trains and planes. It held up surprisingly well despite the seemingly lightweight material. The stretch pockets had holes toward the end of my trip but still functioned well. The body of the pack had some small tears but they didn't spread after covering them with tape. While traveling i covered the pack with a REI backpack cover. I found the size big enough to carry everything i needed for a 10 day trek. While trekking in Patagonia my gear never got wet despite days of rain with the included raincover. Despite heavy loads the pack was comfortable thanks to the suspension system. Pocket space and organization was excellent with numerous easy to get to pockets. The side pockets held my water filter, GPS and other items well. Despite seeming flimsy the included daypack held up well and i used it as a daypack for weeks on the Camino Santiago.

Dislikes

The waterproof hip pocket was not big enough to hold my Samsung s7 edge encased or my Garmin 600T, encased. What a design flaw. For me the weakpoint of the pack was the buckle on the sternum strap. The buckle broke at the beginning of a long trek. I improvised, continued for months. I found no Gregory dealers in S America. When I got back to the USA after 5 months Backcountry Edge replaced the buckle and I continued on for another 16 months. After 2 years the pack looked worn but still functioned. It had been through a lot. I replaced it with another Baltoro 85 Backcountry Edge had on sale. I guess thats the ultimate sign of confidence in a pack.
