Offering exceptional room for your head and shoulders, the 3-season Kelty Dirt Motel 2P tent offers you an unobstructed view of the backcountry if you peel back the protective rainfly.

Description

Offering exceptional room for your head and shoulders, the 3-season Kelty Dirt Motel 2P tent offers you an unobstructed view of the backcountry if you peel back the protective rainfly.

The tapered tent measures 84” x 50” (at its widest point), with a peak height of 42.5 inches. The interior space is 28 square feet. It has two vented vestibules, which together protect almost 18 square feet of real estate.

The tent is supported by compact DAC PressFit poles. The setup for this tent includes two hubbed poles and one ridge pole. This assembly creates vertical walls, which provide more overall living space inside the tent, instead of just a peak in the center. There are internal storage pockets including a ceiling pocket.

The floor of the tent is polyurethane coated 70 denier nylon with a 3000 mm water resistant rating. No-see-um mesh walls provide ventilation and keep out unwelcome guests. Two doors provide flexibility: Each camper can have their own doorway and vestibule or you can dedicate one door and vestibule to storage while keeping the other clear. The freestanding design means you can pitch the tent and then move it around to find the best site. The rainfly is 40 denier siliconized ripstop nylon rated to 1500 mm. All seams are tape sealed to further ensure weather protection.

The standout feature of this tent is Kelty’s popular Stargazing Fly system. This arrangement lets you quickly and easily roll up a portion of the rainfly. Secure the rolled fly with simple clips and you’re free to enjoy a view of the stars and reap the benefits of increased ventilation. If the weather changes or you want more privacy, simply unclip the fly, roll it down and secure it to the tent corners.

This tent includes Kelty’s Shark Mouth stuff sack, designed to make stuffing easier, and reflective guy lines. The custom-fit Kelty Dirt Motel 2P Footprint (sold separately) can further protect your tent from wet ground, roots and rocks.

Great, light and packs small.

Likes

The tent is very easy to set up, I did a moto camping trip and I was setting up faster than my friend with an MSR. The tent packs reasonablely small and light. Geometry is wider on the head side and narrower at the feet side. This chops a little bit of material to contribute with the light weight. Build quality is very good, materials feel high quality. Zippers are nice, make sure to maintain them clean or lubricated. Stargazing type of rainfly adds a lot of airflow in hot weather.

Dislikes

It does not come with a foot print, you will need some extra space to extend both vestibules, that will require at least one stake, this makes the tent not so stand alone. The irregular floor geometry makes the tent lighter, however, it could be challenging when trying to fit sleeping pads for 2 people if the pads are square.

I love my Dirty Hotel!

Likes

Great bang for the buck. With poles that collapse so far it makes the perfect sized bundle to stash in my motorcycle panniers. That sealed the deal for me. A nice shape with loads of interior room. You can move about and dress easily. I plan to use solo but two could fit easily. And the fly creates generous covered outside areas to keep some gear out of the elements. I purchased the custom footprint for it also. I'm a happy camper! (See what I did there!? LOL!)

Dislikes

Yes, the pieces are color-coded but it could be made a little more obvious what goes where. (Primarily aligning the cover fly which I needed three hands to get set right.) In time I'm sure I will get the knack of it and wonder why I was confused. Heck, the last time I camped was in a canvas teepee at the Boy Scout Jamboree. I'm a bit rusty.
