Description

The Kelty Redwing 44 is an excellent balance of storage capacity (2700 cubic inches), price, and performance. This versatile pack is a great option for long day hikes, overnight travel, or day-to-day use.

A single LightBeam aluminum stay and an HDPE framesheet equip the Redwing 44 with lightweight, reliable support. Hex mesh and strategic channeling on the backpanel allow warm air to escape so that you stay cooler while carrying weight. A contoured, padded waistbelt offers comfortable load support. Kelty's patented Scherer Cinch uses a pulley-like system to double the tightening force on the waistbelt, ensuring that the brunt of the pack's weight rests on your hips. When you aren't carrying heavy loads and don't need the additional support, you can remove the waistbelt entirely and reduce the weight of the pack. Load lifter straps relieve stress on your shoulders and an adjustable sternum strap positions the shoulder straps across the chest to prevent chafing under the arms and on the shoulders. Side compression straps help you to cinch and secure the contents of the pack for optimal balance and load distribution.

The main packbag of the Redwing 44 is accessed through a large, zippered front entry that allows the entire face of the pack to open wide for convenient loading and unloading. An additional large pocket located on the front panel provides internal organizational options. Additional features include zippered side pockets, a stash pocket, an ice-axe loop, a carry handle, a hide-away daisy-chain attachment system, and dual mesh water bottle pockets. A lined interior pocket and built-in tube exit make the pack hydration system (sold separately) compatible.

Sturdy, Solid, Adjustable, Kelty Quality

Likes

Nice in between size of a large and small pack.

Dislikes

Not thrilled about the thin lining covering the aluminum support bar in the hydration sleeve. The Redwing 50 has an extra sheet of plastic covering it, whereas the Redwing 44 only has a vlecro sleeve. Looks like a wear point to me. I contacted Kelty about it to make sure it wasn't a defect. I haven't removed the tags on this pack yet, I just can't bring myself to load it with wear area concerns. Other than that, awesome pack.

Great Product as people described

Likes

This day pack is really light and very BIG! It fits as most as a 31" (max) roller bag carry on. I just did a short domestic trip and I was not asked to check the bag size. As people have mentioned, it is very comfortable and surprisingly all the weight transfer was down to my hips instead of my shoulder. Buy one for confidence, specially at Backcountry Edge =)

Dislikes

No dislikes, just wished there was a a few smaller zipper pockets but overall this is an amazing bag

My Favorite Kelty Pack

Likes

I love everything about this pack. It's the perfect size for a weekend backpacking trip, it has all the organization pockets that I love and very lightweight! I also love the green color.

Dislikes

I wish this pack had at least one belt pocket and I don't care much for the thick water bladder pocket because I don't use it. Not a deal breaker, just some observation.

Perfect European Travel Companion

Likes

Size, comfort of carry, easy strap adjustments, cool side pocket layout and organizational features. This was the perfect size for carry on during my travels. This was my 2nd trip to Europe using a backpack - last year I used an osprey porter 46. I wanted to upgrade to something with with a beefier suspension system after discovering how much time I spent standing in airports, stations, and carrying my bag around cities. I did SO MUCH RESEARCH. In the end, I choose this pack because it seemed to offer a good blend of travel-y qualities as well as hiking sensibility. The suspension system was a lifesaver on long travel days. I was abroad for about 45 days and the size was perfect. It’s small enough to keep from overpacking and encourage me to be thoughtful about what I purchase while I’m away (there’s room for small souvineers/keepsakes). I had no problems keeping the pack load under the 10kg weight limit that most airlines have. Overall I think it was the best choice and offers a great mix of features for people who like to travel and adventure outdoors.

Dislikes

A bottom zipper and hip belt pockets would be great but it’s not a big deal. Half of the sternum strap got pulled off by an airport security conveyor and I haven’t figured out how to reattach it yet.

So far, so good

Likes

I've only used couple of times so far but my initial impressions are pretty good! Good bit of room for the size with plenty of room for expansion. Comfortable carrying with pack about half-way loaded, as I've not had a need for a bigger load yet. Plenty of pockets. It's not quite as "vented" on the back as say the Osprey or Gregory equivalent size, but those packs weren't nearly as comfortable to just sling over my shoulder for just casual carrying around. This pack so far seems to meet my needs of day hikes, commute carry, and for overnight casual traveling. It remains to be seen how this holds up over time, as fabric is definitely much lighter weight material than prior versions. This could also be a positive as pack is noticeably lighter.

Dislikes

Fabric is not as heavy duty as my previous Redwing pack so will see how it holds up over time.
