Description

A highly-breathable, lightweight, and weather-protective minimalist shelter, the Outdoor Research Stargazer Bivy allows backpackers and alpinists to hunker down from the elements when necessary but also take in the night sky when conditions clear.

Designed to snugly accommodate most backpacking-style sleeping bags and sleeping pads, the bivy measures 82" x 26" at its widest point. It does taper to 19.5" wide at the feet to save on weight and minimize packed size. An integrated Delrin pole runs over the top of the bag, keeping material off of your face and providing nearly 20" of headroom while you are lying flat on your back. When not needed, the Delrin pole can be left at home, shaving an additional 2 ounces off of the 19.2 ounce packed weight of the bivy.

The bivy is constructed of Outdoor Research's proprietary Ascentshell fabric. This ripstop nylon with a polyester backer incorporates mechanical stretch and excellently balances durability, breathability, and weatherproof protection. No-see-um netting at the opening of the bivy provides an unimpeded view of the stars on clear nights while still keeping bugs from find their way into the bivy. A ripstop nylon floor with TPU lamination bolsters durability and further ensures weather protection. All of the bivy's seams are tape sealed.

The Outdoor Research Stargazer Bivy is available in your choice of color options. A stuff sack is included.

Great Bivy if you are a Bivy person!

Likes

I like how thin the material is on this bivy. It is really light and easy to set up once you know how. (watch the set up of the OR Helium Bivy if you need help) The longer zipper is really nice for entry and exit. The large mesh area is great for air flow and views on nice nights. I recommend staking it out at the head to help support the pole.

Dislikes

There are a lot of zipper pulls due to the double zippers on the mesh and the body of the bivy. It would be nice if the zippers and pulls were both color coded. Make sure your zippers pulls are on the correct side of the material when zipping it up so that it closes all the way. When zipping the bivy up from the inside, I recommend taking the zipper from the head of the bivy to the waist. This will ensure that the rain collar stays over the exterior of the zipper to keep the water from leaking in. When I zipped it up the opposite way, it would pull the collar back and flip it away from the zipper. (I wish I could show you pictures) This is a great bivy, but I am better suited to tents, otherwise I would give it 5 stars!
