Description

Adventurer Peter Bakwin has established numerous "fastest known times" and run all over the world, all while searching for the perfect pack. With Ultimate Direction’s help, he built his own, the Adventure Vest 4.0. Despite weighing just 10.6 ounces, the vest boasts an impressive amount of storage and remains balanced and secure while you push deep into the backcountry.

Constructed of lightweight SilNylon and breathable mesh, the vest is surprisingly strong and capable of comfortably carrying clothes, gear, and hydration. Padded/ventilated strapping and edging throughout the pack body provides a comfortable fit and breathable performance. To ensure a proper fit, the vest is available in Small (23"-32" chest measurement), Medium (30"-39"), and Large (37"-46") size options. NOTE: When full of gear, the vest will fit smaller. An integrated Comfort Cinch system provides on-the-go fit adjustability across the small of your back without applying undue pressure to your lats. Dual sternum straps with sliding adjustability help you further fine-tune fit.

There are two stacked, zippered main compartments that offer 1000 cubic inches of storage capacity. The one closest to the body can safely stow a hydration system (system not included) and a full load of gear while the smaller vertical-zippered pocket is better for separating smaller items. A zig-zag upper bungee attachment system is a perfect spot for securing gloves, discarded layers, or other items you want to keep readily accessible. Beneath it, a stretch mesh pouch stows wet gear or items that would take up too much internal space. Two large, zippered mesh lateral pockets provide ample space to keep items within easy reach. On the chest portion of the harness there are large front pockets which conveniently secure electronics or water bottles. Ultimate Direction includes one soft-sided Body Bottle with a 500 ml capacity. Other features include an additional zippered front harness pocket, phone-compatible harness pockets, and dual ice axe loops. An integrated rear attachment system allows you to carry poles in a horizontal fashion that reduces "bounce" and keeps poles at the ready but out of your way.

  • Comfort Cinch technology provides a custom fit with easy on-the-go adjustment
  • 4-way stretch material
  • Trekking pole holder minimizes bounce and snaps out of the way when not in use
  • Sliding rail sternum straps
  • Bottle holster tightens to carry phone or camera
  • Phone compatible pockets

Great all-around vest for the (sale) price

I've put about 35 miles on it so far across a few trips: Fits really well and snuggly, with lots of adjustability, sternum straps in particular are easy to adjust. Lots of storage space, SO MUCH STORAGE space. Honestly, looking at just the frontside of the pack, I can fit about 35 gels with EASE if I wanted to, and that's not using the burrito pocket (which for me is generally phone/map/compass) or the soft flask 'pocket'. The back is surely enough for any essential kit, you've got space. Bladder fits and routes nicely.

Dislikes

Can take some practice dialing in the fit particularly with the back/cinch system: tightening is a breeze but loosening the cinch on the fly is a little harder (and would be very hard without flexible shoulders). On the topic of flexible shoulders, you're gonna need them if you want to really make use of the two side/ribcage pockets. Not the easiest on the go, but I'm able to use them. On the topic of these pockets, they're pretty tight and formfitting to your ribcage. Yes the mesh is stretchy, but think about what you put in there accordingly. They can easily fit 2 cliff bars each, but you might be better off using them for something softer like gels (each side pocket easily fits 7 gels). I personally have the 'just a scratch'/'flat' part of my first aid kit in one - bandaids, blister pads, antiseptic wipes, etc. Rear attachment straps are really meant for ice picks I think and don't have bungies or anything to make them easy to use for trekking poles (for folks like me with telescoping ones that are too long to comfortably attach up front) attached horizontally. I've found with a bit of twisting of the straps, I can attach the poles vertically in the back. There are a lot of 'tricks' to getting the back mesh pockets to be tight - usually they're kinda limp at the top and you could lose stuff. Recommend clipping the bottom one to the bungies in the middle, and sticking the top two loops (top of bag and upper mesh pocket) into the bungie 'cincher' near the top. Kinda wish there were a good video/photo guide of ALL the features. Single soft flask pocket maybe a problem for some, but I don't have an issue with it personally. Particularly as it nears empty it can flop a bit/dig a bit, but it's been manageable.
