Description

The brainchild of renowned backcountry adventurer Andrew Skurka, the Sierra Designs High Route 1 solo shelter offers livability, durability, and versatility for extended 3-season use. Pitched with trekking poles (not included), the tent saves weight and minimizes packed size.

The shelter consists of a 20D nylon ripstop rainfly and an inner tent body constructed of 15D nylon, no-see-um mesh, and a 20D nylon ripstop floor. Both the fly and the floor have PE treatments that ensure full weather protection. The inner tent measures 87” x 27.5” and provides 16.6 square feet of space. The fly creates ample protected exterior storage for packs, boots, and other gear. Minimalist backpacker can pitch the rainfly like a floorless tarp and enjoy 29.8 square feet of interior space and shave weight from 1 pound, 11 ounces to just a single pound!

NOTE: The High Route 1 is not freestanding and does require trekking poles. Integrated guyout points and obvious pole placement points make pitching the tent surprisingly easy with a little practice. An offset design allows easy entry to the interior of the shelter which isn’t always the case with trekking pole-pitched tents. Lighweight aluminum stakes are included to ensure a secure, taut pitch.

  • 20D nylon ripstop 1200mm PeU floor
  • 15D nylon No-see-um mesh body
  • 20D nylon ripstop, silicon 1200mm PeU fly
  • Requires two adjustable trekking poles or 47" accessory pole
  • Versatile tarp or tent configuration
  • Compresses to slightly larger than a Nalgene bottle
  • Off-set poles and vertical walls
  • Simple, intuitive, fast pitch
  • Oversized volume for more livable space
  • Garage door gear closet

Functional, roomy and lightweight

Likes

Innovative design and solid construction, with tons of useful features that were obviously learned from years of backpacking experiences. Very roomy, great ventilation, and easy to set up after a little practice. Requires a pair of adjustable hiking poles which are the primary support.

My choice for 2020 AT thru-hike

Likes

Tall vestibule, Open awning setup, Fly first setup, Flexible setups I have had for the last 5 years a Copper Spur UL2, which I have used a lot, sharing the tent with my son, with happy results. But for my first really looong solo hike I am looking to cut my tent weight in half. A Zpacks Duplex was out of my budget. It was natural to look at the BA Fly Creek UL2 HV. As expected, the Fly Creek is a well-made and complete tent package. However, I need vestibule space for my pre-dawn morning coffee, and the tight slope does not give me the vertical space. It rains a lot during hiking season on the AT, so I was looking for a tent that I could quickly setup dry in the rain as well as cook in the vestibule. Since you setup the High Route fly first on the trekking poles, you create cover for the rest of your setup. With the HR you get a tall vestibule on the storage side. Using the “open awing” setup you get a lot more space and a cross breeze to boot. I slept through a Florida thunderstorm with awnings open all night and stayed dry.

Dislikes

Door location The door location into the bug-net is not ideal, it seems too far forward, and I have difficulty reaching guys and clips to make adjustments from the inside. It is going to take some getting use to using the space effectively.

Nice Choice - Better than The Previous Version?

Likes

Lighter than the previous version of the tent. Still pays attention to a lot of the small details.

Dislikes

The previous version had just a bit extra room in it, which was welcomed. Is it worth the weight tradeoff? Probably depends on the type of trips you do and how much room you need (faster/lighter trips, go with this one - need more room and/or expecting extended rough weather, I might try and find the old version on sale).

Great Job

Likes

Lighter weight than previous version, yet provides similar functionality, versatility, and roominess as a solo shelter.

Dislikes

The blue color is a bit loud.
