Description

A streamlined version of the beloved Crown2 60, the Granite Gear Crown2 38 is built especially for the truly ounce-counting thru-hiker or backpacker looking to save weight without completely sacrificing carrying comfort. It's also small enough to double as a day pack.

Equipped with Granite Gear's VC Mark 2 Frame System, the pack employs a compression molded polypropylene framesheet, a molded foam backpanel, and an overlay of durable, laminated mesh to effectively carry weight, provide load stability, and deliver ventilation to help keep you cool. Despite its lightweight design, the pack comfortably carries up to 35 pounds. Padded shoulder straps and a padded hipbelt that adjusts to fit 26"-42" waists enhance comfort and stability. NOTE: The one-size pack has a fixed suspension that best fits 18"-21" torso lengths. An adjustable sternum strap and load-lifter straps provide fine-tuned fit adjustment.

The top-loading 2320 cubic inch-capacity packbag is accessed through a wide-opening roll-top entry. A top lid protects additional storage and can be removed entirely to save on weight. Lightweight compression straps let you cinch down the packbag to keep contents safely stowed. A large front shove-it pocket serves as an additional storage space and twin side mesh pockets are perfect for water bottles or other gear. Large zippered hipbelt pockets keep valuables and essentials close at hand.

The Granite Gear Crown2 38 internal frame backpack is available in your choice of color options.

Great pack but too short

Likes

There's a lot to like about this pack, which is basically a smaller Crown 2. It's very comfortable for its weight, it's fairly priced, and it's a great volume for most short backpacking trips. I particularly like the adjustable hipbelt, which allows the belt to wrap around the hips of those of us with bellies and properly shift the weight to the full length of the iliac crest.

Dislikes

The problem I have with this pack is its listed torso range of 18-21; I think that's not exactly accurate. My experience with the pack tells me that it is probably great for 18 and 19 inch torsos, but at 20 inches it starts to be difficult to keep the weight off your shoulders without pulling the pack up around your waist. There's just not enough back panel between the center of the lumbar pad and the point where the shoulder straps reach the pack body. So far there is no tall version of this pack, and the regular size doesn't seem sufficient for those of us at the higher end of the recommended torso length.

Great pack for the price

Likes

Very comfortable shoulder straps and hip belt. Great capacity for anything from an overnighter to thru hiking if you have your gear pretty dialed in. Sub 2 lbs for sub 2 hundred. Narrow and short for excellent shoulder and neck range of motion. Lots-o-straps for compression or attaching whatnot (35 lbs capacity with frame sheet)

Dislikes

Um... maybe the color options, I chose the barro/black which looks real good, but what's wrong with all black?

Lightweight Backpack

Likes

I love the color options, stream-lined features, and low weight. This is a great pack for many hikers and backpackers.

Dislikes

Unfortunately, this pack did not fit my torso well when fully loaded with my gear. It also carried awkward when i emptied some gear out.

Best alternative to Cuben Fiber packs

Likes

This pack rides real good and comfortable with a heavier load. I removed the brain and since it's still summer months I took out the frame sheet to reduce the pack weight down. All my hammock gear, underquilt, top quilt, food, electronics etc... loads very well on the inside and my other accessories and water bottles fit well on the outside storage pockets. The straps are padded nice with no cutting or chafing problems and the load lifters are a bonus. The hip belt fits good and is adjustable. The belt pockets fit my cellphone with case easily and also several snacks on the other side. I have all my gear dialed in and didn't have any issues transitioning to this pack... I hiked a 12 mile day and a marathon the next on my first weekend out with it. Looking forward to the fall and colder weather when I add my other gear to it and add back in the frame sheet to support the extra weight. I think this is the most comparable pack to the Hyperlite brand at less than half the price and a couple more features. Other things: Great back ventilation Side pockets fit a ton of crap Easy to add shock chord for more lash points if you need to add even more crap! Strap for the roll top is great! It keeps the pack compressed and can strap down additional crap on the top like a sleeping pad or bear container. Also like that the roll top part is not velcro... and is easily accessed without closing shut.

Dislikes

I think they should delete the hydration port and pack brain. On the side mesh pockets they should sew in a piece of shock cord at the top for a tighter clamp when gear or bottles are in the pocket. It really is fine without it but there's literally nothing else to nit pick about.
