Carries well. Comfortable.

I have used a few different child carriers with mixed results. They work well with smaller kids but have had troubles with carriers when kids are in the stage where they can almost walk on their own but need to be carried a lot when they get tired. Kelty has a long history of making backpacks that carry heavy loads comfortably. I have an old external frame from Kelty that carries anything I load on it.The hip belt is amazing. In this regard I have not been disappointed with the Kelty Journey child carrier. The hip belt is very comfortable. Better than others I have tried. I also like the Perfectfit system that lets me dial in and adjust the fit to where I want it. The pocket that can be washed is a good idea. Kids can be messy on the trail. The storage pockets have plenty of room to hold snacks, jackets, and whatever items you need for a day of hiking. The built in sun shade works better for younger kids. Taller kids might feel that it sits a little too close to the top of their head. I'm not a huge fan of the hip belt water bottle pocket. It's convenient, but depending on the size of the water bottle, it can kind of feel in the way. I wish it had couple of more accessible water bottle pockets on the main body of the pack besides the two in the front. The water bladder storage is easy to get to in order to refill it.

I would have liked a couple of water bottle pockets that were easier to reach besides the one on the hip belt.

Awesome child carrier

Once all the settings are tuned in, this child carrier works great. The first hike we used it on was about 2.5 miles long and, by the end of the hike, I finally had the carrier setup just right so that most of the weight was on my hips. Keep in mind that once the carrier is packed with all the baby stuff, snacks, water, and child, it can reach the weight limit pretty quickly. It’s a good idea to have someone else with a daypack to carry some of the items to lighten the load.

The opening for the water bladder compartment is a bit tight and I’m always worried that the zipper will puncture the bladder. Our son’s head tends to hang from the side when he falls asleep, my wife is making a small pillow to stuff in between him and the safety strap so we can lay his head on it when he falls asleep.
