Description

Ideal for day hikes or ultra-lightweight overnighters, the Osprey Kestrel 38 balances weight, storage capacity (2100+ cubic inches), features, price and performance. A lightweight, supportive suspension enables the Kestrel 38 to comfortably carry loads of up to 40 pounds!

Employing ridge molded foam and built-in air channels, the Kestrel 38's AirScape backpanel provides flexible support and breathability to combat heat build-up between your back and the pack body. A lightweight aluminum peripheral frame and a foam framesheet effectively distribute weight and deliver supportive stability. The Small/Medium Kestrel 38 is designed to fit torso lengths ranging from 16"-20" and the Medium/Large size fits 19”-23” torsos. The padded, contoured hipbelt, and padded shoulder straps aid in stability and load transfer. An adjustable sternum strap and load-lifter straps further enhance fit. Side compression straps cinch down to keep the contents of the pack safely in.

The top-loading 2100+ cubic-inch capacity packbag is accessed beneath a fixed top lid that incorporates zippered compartments for gear storage. A vertical zipper on the face of the pack also grants access to the interior of the packbag without having to remove the lid. A zippered lower compartment is ideal for a sleeping bag or other gear. A divider between the main packbag and the sleeping bag compartment can be pulled aside to convert the Kestrel 38 to a single large compartment. A large stretch woven pocket on the front of the pack keeps layers close at hand.

Other features include Stow-on-the-Go trekking pole attachments, tuck-away ice axe loops, daisy chain attachment points, an included raincover, a safety whistle built into the sternum strap, zippered hibpelt pockets, and stretch side water bottle pockets. An external sleeve is ideal for a hydration system (not included).

The Osprey Kestrel 38 backpack is available in your choice of size and color options.

Great pack for the price

Likes

The Kestrel 38 has an ample amount of room for 1-2 day like overnight trips, but is also compact enough for day trekking. The suspension system rides comfortably and disperses the weight well. Unlike the Stratos 24, which I also have, the hydration compartment is outside of the main pack. This makes accessing it when the pack is full much more convenient.

Dislikes

The only drawback, so far, is the size of the sleeping bag compartment. Newer bags that compact smaller are no problem, but my 20 year old Gore Tex and down bag requires a little bit of extra shoving to load. Not really much of an issue though.

Outstanding Pack

Likes

The Osprey Kestrel 38 is absolutely awesome. It's features, and lack there of, make it a no-nonsense go-to bag...for me. And the airspeed support system is super comfortable. I have taken it backcountry split-boarding on Shasta and Castle Peak, and it is able to carry every bit of my essential gear, plus.
