The Outdoor Research Men's Superstrand LT Hoodie uses a soft, lightweight, and packable insulation that's as close a synthetic mimic to down as we've seen. Best of all, it continues to keep you warm even when it isn't a dry, bluebird day.

Description

  • Ultra-lightweight construction saves weight and minimizes bulk: The VerticalX Superstrand synthetic insulation has a similar weight and loft as 700-800 fill down insulation and the 12D nylon ripstop shell fabric offers water-resistance (note: not fully waterproof) and wind-resistance.
  • Low-profile fit enhancements maximize adaptability: An insulated and adjustable hood with stretch binding provides a close and comfortable fit and an elastic-bound hem and elastic-bound cuffs further ensure comfort while maintaining an overall layering-friendly fit.
  • Warm pockets with built-in versatility: Zippered insulated pockets provide a warm place for your hands as well as secure storage and the left hand pocket doubles as a stuff sack when you aren't wearing the jacket and want to stow it in your pack.

While I love my down puffy, the biggest problem with them is the care and handling needed to keep them in top shape. I now can have the best of both worlds with the Superstrand LT Hoodie. This synthetic fill thinks it’s down but has none of the drawbacks, like susceptibility to moisture, migration, and durability. I love how it packs down small into its own pocket, so if it warms up midday, I can shed and stow while hardly taking up any space in my pack. I find this jacket best worn over a base layer and thin mid-layer, as it seems roomier than some similar garments. A closer fit helps increase the insulative properties by trapping body heat efficiently, so this is one jacket you probably don’t need to size up in.

Not warm enough, zipper not that great

I use to own a (now discontinued) Outdoor Research Diode jacket, and I wore an XXL. In the Superstrand LT, I wear a Large. I wore the jacket outside while the weather was in the fifties. With a t-shirt on, I was cold. I'm not sure about the windproof claim. The zipper is now a cheap thing, that is not easily undone when you get to the bottom when unzipping. I was told I looked good, but that wasn't enough to make me keep the jacket.
